Improve Your Skills, Make New Musical Friends
Have you always wanted to play in a band, but didn't know how to get started, or couldn't find others who shared your taste in music, or skill level? Maybe you played in a band when you were younger, but gave it up because of family, work, or other commitments; now you have the time, but no longer have the musical connections. Whatever your circumstances, the West Bank School of Music has a long record of successfully matching students with compatible abilities and interests in a band led by one of our talented faculty.

WBSM has professional musicians on our faculty who lead bands of varied experience levels in a variety of styles. The band members and instructor set their goals, choose music, work on arrangements, and rehearse weekly. The instructor often plays with the group.

Not Sure About Playing In A Band?
Playing in a band is one of the most rewarding of all musical experiences. In addition to the simple joy of collaboration, playing in a group improves your sense of timing, hones your listening and practice skills, exposes you to songs you might not otherwise learn, and gives you musical friendships that can endure and grow well beyond the life of the band. In short, playing in a band makes you a better musician all the while you are enjoying yourself and making friends.

How do I sign up to be in a band?
There are three easy steps to register:
  1. Decide whether Level I, Level II, or Composer and Performer Orchestra best fit your goals.
  2. Fill out our band application form which asks you questions about your experience level with your chosen instrument(s) and voice, styles of music you prefer, and other background info.
  3. Email or Snailmail the application to WBSM for review. Some bands require a follow up audition.
Have questions about the application form or not sure which band is the best fit? Contact the WBSM office at 612-333-6651 to speak to a friendly staff member, or email questions to us at info@wbsm.org.

Level I - Bands meet for 16 weeks or more in weekly 90-minute sessions. They work on building a song repertoire, but there are no long-range goals or performances planned. These players, generally advanced beginners through intermediate, focus on the art and craft of group playing.

Level II - These are on-going groups whose players make a minimum one-year commitment, with weekly 90 minute rehearsals. Made up of more experienced intermediate and advanced players, these ensembles make longer range plans in terms of repertoire, performing and promotion. Most Level II players participate for 2-3 years. These ensembles are for musicians dedicated to the "long haul" with professional or more serious amateur musical ambitions.

Composer and Performer Orchestra

This is a chance for young or adult students to join an ensemble where the students write the music! Through workshops and performing their own music as well as that of other students, members of this ensemble acquire the skills to become more complete musicians, empowering them to forge their own musical paths. Includes one group rehearsal and one individual private lesson each week. This program runs year-round in 4 week sessions.

The base cost is $100 for six 90 minute sessions, but prices vary somewhat by instructor. The cost for Composer and Performer Orchestra is $160 for one weekly 1/2 hour private lesson and one weekly 90 minute group rehearsal for four weeks.

Composer-Performer Orchestra for Youth or Adults - Stefan Kac

Q: Okay, so what exactly is this program, anyway?
A: The West Bank School of Music Composer-Performer Orchestra (CPO) is an educational
program for musicians of all ages who are interested in writing and performing their
own instrumental music.

Q: How is the program structured?
A: The program runs in 4-week sessions. Students attend CPO activities twice a week
when the program is in session:

One Class Meeting (all students present)
  • group rehearsal of student compositions
  • collaborative study/arranging of works by major composers
  • instructor-led lectures
  • group listening and discussion
One Individual Private Lesson for Each Student with a WBSM Instructor
  • individualized instruction related
  • traditional instrumental study
The program accepts all students who want to join, regardless of the instrument they play or their experience with composing. We won't always have every instrument represented, and we may often have many of the same instrument represented, but finding ways to make music anyway is a crucial lesson which, once it is learned, becomes tremendously empowering. That's why the program was founded.
